World Trade Center Disability Law

As Americans, September 11, 2001 is a day that will never be erased from our minds, nor the bravery of the thousands of individuals who came together to help in the rescue and clean up efforts at the World Trade Center. Many of those who participated in the effort to help our country to recover from this devastating event put their own health at risk. Hundreds of firefighters, police, and other rescue workers have complained that the city of New York did not provide adequate respiratory protection equipment needed to work in the toxic environment of Ground Zero, or were even informed of the health dangers that could be involved in working at or near the ruins of the World Trade Center. As a result, some have reported of experiencing physical and psychological problems and many others fear that they may develop health problems such as cancer and other ailments in future.

In response to these claims and fears, the New York State and Local Retirement System has developed the World Trade Center Disability Law. The law entitles those who are or become permanently disabled in the future or those who can no longer perform their work duties as a result of a condition that was incurred consequently to working at Ground Zero, to collect a disability pension. In order to take advantage of the World Trade Center Disability Law, individuals must file a notice by SEPTEMBER 10, 2010 with the New York State and Local Retirement System. Even if you are not currently experiencing any physical problems, you are encouraged to file a notice anyway to protect your rights in the future.

If you were involved in the Ground Zero rescue or clean up efforts, you may be entitled to a disability pension. Contact Todd Strier about more information on the World Trade Center Disability Pension
