BRONX MAN AWARDED $19 MILLION AFTER BEING DRAGGED BY SUBWAY TRAIN
A Bronx man who was nearly dragged to his death when his foot got caught between a subway car and the platform has been awarded $19 million from the MTA by a Manhattan jury. The man required eight surgeries to repair his right foot after a fellow passenger jostled him as he attempted to disembark the D train in July 2011, and his foot became caught.
The CDC and HHS Release a Comprehensive Study of Injury Accidents
The study, Injury in the United States is a comprehensive study on the likelihood of accidents by age, sex and employment. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) compiled the data from research and statistics gathered by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), a branch of the Office of Analysis and Epidemiology (OAE).
According to Injury in the United States, on average there are 167,000 deaths from injuries, 31 million people are treated in hospital emergency rooms, and 109 million people are hospitalized due to accidents annually.
The report states that males have a higher hospitalization rate as opposed to females except for women over the age of 65. Women over the age of 75 have the highest rate of injury hospitalization rate of all age or sex groups. Teens and young adults have the highest rate of initial injury related emergency room visits.
The leading cause of injury related emergency room visits for teens and young adults are:
Motor vehicle accidents
Struck by or against an object
Falls are the leading cause of injury related emergency room visits for all other age groups.
The study revealed that injuries account one out of every 14 deaths in the US. However among teens and young adults injuries account for three out of every four deaths.
