If you work for the City of New York and sustained a permanent disability whether physical or emotional, then you may be entitled to a disability pension. Our firm specializes in helping civil servants who are unable to reach their retirement year file for a disability pension. There are several types of pensions available depending on your employer and which pension system you belong to.

Our firm has over 15 years experience helping civil servants, such as sanitation workers, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, transit employees, correction officers, sheriffs, police officers, fireman and teachers obtain their disability pensions. We have helped civil servants obtain accident disability pensions, ordinary disability pensions, heart bill related pensions and world trade center disability pensions.

Filing for a pension can be a difficult and lengthy task. Our office is prepared to guide you through the entire stage from application preparation to appeal, if necessary. We will help collect the medical evidence needed and explain to the applicant what is needed to win that coveted pension.

Disability pensions, unlike service related pensions, require that you set forth medical evidence that proves you are unable to continue in your job title. Some pension plans also require you prove that the disabling injuries resulted from an accident, as opposed to an incident. It is important to speak with a pension attorney quickly to decide what type of pension you are eligible for.

Upon your first call to our office, we will be happy to discuss the facts of your case to determine which rules apply in order to better guide you through the process. We are happy to meet with you in our office or we can come to your home.

Our office is familiar with all of the NYC pension plans including NYCERS. Our office is involved at every step of the process from application, collection of medical evidence, preparation for your interview and attendance at the pension interview or appeal.

It is important to remember that your employer may not have any control over your pension application. It is usually decided by a separate City agency.

Be aware: There are strict rules and statute of limitations which apply to your application. If you are in doubt regarding whether you are eligible or when you must apply, we strongly suggest you contact your pension board, your employer or your union representative immediately.

Once a pension is awarded their are income limitations to be considered. You can view New York earnings limitations here.

If you have a question about your job related injury and whether or not you qualify or are eligible for a pension, contact Todd Strier for a free consultation.
